NYS offers legal and financial counseling to fight foreclosure

Apr 25, 2013

New York is offering legal and financial advisors to help homeowners navigate the complex route to fight foreclosure.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is releasing a television public service announcement that tells New Yorkers how they can get free housing counseling and legal assistance. The TV spots will air in English and Spanish statewide.

Homeowners struggling with their mortgage lenders should call the state foreclosure hotline at 855-HOME-456.

Information is also available on the state website.

The state will direct homeowners to organizations and agencies in their area for help including advocacy with lenders, financial counseling and assistance preparing documents. The result can lower mortgage payments and prevent foreclosure. CCCS of Rochester is one agency that can help in the greater Rochester area.

Schneiderman says 7,400 homeowners have been counseled in the first five months of the program.
